I'll probably think of more at a different time:

Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar for excellent pita and hummus, an atmosphere to stimulate the hookah-lover in you,and good local music on occassion
Milan the lunch buffet and mango lassi rock
Blue Moon Diner a little hole-in-the-wall atmosphere for yummy breakfast, old skool board games while you wait fer yer joe and monthly ladies arm wrestling
Ten Emily says the cuisine's not quite authentic, but it's good eats

I'll be back when my brain kicks in.

I LOVE Ten! I think the food is great but it's best not to go there too hungry because well, it's sushi, and its kind of on the pricey side, but well worth it. Plus they give you a piece of Gearhardt's chocolate at the end!
I eat out fairly often and I haven't been to a chain restaurant in Cville in a long time. Here are some of my favorites...
-Ten (see above)
-Himalayan Fusion...AWESOME samosas and naan. My friends and I actually had a naan-athon (hardy, har, har) there last night
-Eppies...comfort food thats not drowning in fats and grease, you can feel good about eating here!
-Revolutionary Soup (I get their garlic club wrap w/ veggie bacon at least once a week. One of my all time favorites)
-Christian's Pizza...if you come to Cville you have to eat here. Cheap, fast, and you can choose from an assortment of toppings or you can design your own.
-Take It Away...it's on the corner and has great, simple, classy sandwiches on great bread with an amazing secret sauce...plus Tom the owner is the best!
-The Market...the Market makes sandwiches at the Forest Lakes and Bellair Exxon stations and they are a standby for me.
-Continental Divide...awesome tequila bar and amazing gourmet-y tex mex. I recommend the red hot blue nachos and the veggie fajitas that have lots of yummy veggies in them like portabello mushrooms and snow peas.
There's a ton more, but those are the ones off the top of my head. I'll post on other favorite eats from other places I've lived asap!

How could I forget...Bluegrass Grill! My favorite, favorite place for breakfast and brunch. Their portabello hash is amazing.

I hope that I don't get replies indicating that any of these are actually chain-staurants. That would be really disappointing.

Ditto on:
- Eppie's
- Twisted Branch
- Rev Soup
- The Market (esp. Bellair, since you can visit Mudhouse at the same time)
- Christian's Pizza ("I'll have a slice of... uh.. whatever THAT one is," while pointing to a pizza)
- Himalayan Fusion

Also:
- The Flat. Although they have made me wait/forgotten my order more than once, I still like it.
- Sticks. I can take anyone I know there, and they all love it.
- Court Square Tavern. Potpie and beer!
- Miyako

New favorite:
- Cafe 88. House-made soymilk! And dishes with names like "Wonderful Chicken" and "Amazing Chicken".

And, is it wrong to love The Tavern? They have all my breakfast favorites, and there are all those taxidermied things (and former U.Va. teams) watching you eat...

I've only eaten at the Market once, I think, if there is one near Ivy. I don't think I cared for it. Perhaps there isn't one near Ivy and the place I didn't like was a different one.

Oh, thanks, eec (please send me a PM and let me know if I can call you by your actual first name here) for reminding me about Cafe '88. I've loved Mrs. Chen since she was serving up vegetarian goodness at Ming Dynasty. I am thrilled that she is now within walking distance and has outdoor seating. I had no idea she made her own soy milk! I recommend the pineapple fried rice.

Mrs. Chen is one of those local proprietors who is worth chatting up: she always remembers your name and your order and what grade your kid is in now and on which soccer team he plays. She's a treasure!

Another one in Preston Plaza that's worth the mention: Breadworks. Not only do they provide job-training and experience to those who may otherwise have difficulty getting hired elsewhere, they also make kick-ass sandwiches on their home-baked sunflower wheat bread. Where's the "swoon" emoticon?
