I've never thought of churches and temples as being big wasters of energy, with their use of lots of natural light and candles, but to save money, lots of houses of worship are going green. Churches are renovating with eco-friendly upgrades, including low-flish toilets and solar power lighting. This is a huge change for these institutions that are very traditionally minded and far from concerned about the technical aspects of their buildings. Boston area temples and churches are jumping on board the green-renovation train. Check out boston.com's article on the trend in the area. I'll give an "Amen" to that! Happy Sunday!

Hairpieces and headbands are hot again, recalling everything from flapper headpieces to hippie headbands. You can utilize these pieces to dress up an outfit or cas it down. One thing is for sure though, feathers are hot. Feathered headbands, featuring bright and uniquely patterned feathers, are being engineered to curve around the head and flatter the shape of the head and face. Multiple Locallectual companies are creating these fabulous pieces and all are doing them with a little different flare.
San Francisco company 1228, Los Angeles company Littledoe, and Portland studio Mothlove are all making fantastic hairpieces. Check them out and find the perfect piece for you.

I.LOVE.THE OFFICE. I know, so does everyone else, but it really is, in my humble opinion, one of the best shows on tv right now. Well anyways, I was watching an old episode today (season 2's "Office Olympics" to be exact) and my ears perked up when Dwight was talking about his family's beet farm in Pennsylvania that sells their beets to restaurants and other local customers. I got so excited! The Office made a comment about local farmers and supporting them! Okay, maybe not totally, but at least that's how I interpreted it in my mind. So if you want to go out there and emulate your favorite show, then support your local beet farmers! Who knows, they could be named Dwight or Mose! -Jess

Yesterday, a beer tasting and press tour was held at Labatt Brewery in LaSalle to show off the recent environmental improvements at the plant. Labatt claims to have reduced their carbon missions by about 44% in the past 3 years, as well as reducing their water consumption by 35%, its fuel use in beer making by 30%, and its electricity by 6%.
Labatt also says that each beer bottle is reused an average of 15 times with the waster glass is sold to recyclers. The brewery's organic waste, leftover cereals and yeast, is sold to animal feed producers. The bottle caps are melted down and recycled, and the beer cases are compressed, baled and sold to paper manufacturers. That translates into the company recycling 94% of their waste, a goal they accomplished in 2007. The LaSalle brewery is the only one of
Labatt's six breweries that treats its own water, as well.
Good job Labatt. Keep up the good work! -Jess
