During harsh economic times, it is good to know where the taxpayer's dollar is going. According to this article, a substantial portion of these payments are going to industrial animal farming operations. The first paragraph of the news release:
''Des Moines, Iowa - A report released today exposes how industrial hog and dairy operations are subsidized through the federal Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The report, entitled Industrial Livestock at the Taxpayer Trough, estimates that between 2003 and 2007, roughly 1,000 industrial hog and dairy operations have captured at least $35 million per year in taxpayer support through EQIP. While the new Secretary of Agriculture has been chosen, it does not mean that the people's ideas won't still be taken into consideration when it comes to what actions he and the President-elect will undertake together. Earlier this month, a group of experts sent Barack Obama a letter outlining which specific actions have to be taken for the national (and international) food crisis to subside. In addition to a copy of the letter, more information on the US Working Group on the Food Crisis can be found here. For those of you who have been following what Tom Vilsack and Obama are planning on for the years to come, it would be interesting to compare it with what the working group envisioned in its Call to Action.

Leave it to California to have an agricultural vision and then to ask the state's residents what they think about it. (Yes, I am mostly proud of my beautiful home state...) In any case, check this out. The link will take you to a website that discusses the document, the movement, and the people behind both.

One clear connection between the economic downturn and sustainable agriculture? The Fair Food Foundation's loss of funding. As the story goes, ''The Ann Arbor-based Fair Food Foundation is the latest victim of the alleged Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme.''

One excerpt from a recent article on the food-engineering giant Monsanto says it all:
'''If Monsanto can eliminate seed cleaners, they would have accomplished a TOTAL monopoly in the Midwest, the bread basket of the world, and they would control world food, feed and now bio-fuel prices at will.''
This is a terrifying statement for anyone who supports sustainable (and diversified, natural) agriculture. Seed cleaners make using non-genetically engineered seeds for growing crops possible. Read on.
