Happy 4th from beautiful Minnesota! In honor of the Fourth of July, I want to write about American Flags, and where they are made. Apparently, a large percentage of actual full-size flags are made right here in the states by companies such as the U.S. Flag Shop and Valley Forge Flag Company. Currently, imported American flags are considerably cheaper, although they are reputed to be of a lesser quality. But nearly all of the small, vinyl flags ubiqutous on cars and waved in parades, are made overseas. Doesn't that seem fundamentally wrong? Did you know that there is a group called the FMAA (Flag Manufacturers Association of America)? According to the site, they are "a non-profit trade association, established in 2003, representing the leading United States flag manufacturers and suppliers dedicated to educating and promoting the quality, variety and proper use of flags manufactured in the United States." Here in Minnesota, they have actualy passed a law that requires all flags sold in the state to be made in the USA, and would hit violators with up to a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail! As you can imagine, feelings are mixed on this type of legislation. While other states such as Arizona and Tennessee have laws on the books in regard to flags in public schools or flags purchased via state contract, Minnesota has taken this to another level. What do you think about this initiative? Karen
